Victorian homes rose in popularity in the United Kingdom during the reign of Queen Victoria, from the mid to late 19th century. The ornate style quickly spread worldwide and gained traction in the United States from 1860 to 1900. Victorian architecture is a broad category that encompasses several well-known styles, including Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire and Romanesque. A Victorian-style house has very distinct exterior traits — an asymmetrical two- or three-story shape, elaborate trim and moulding, vibrant color schemes, steep roofs, wraparound porches, and stained glass. On the inside, Victorian decor is just as regal, with floral patterns, intricate wallpaper, hand-carved furniture, velvet and lace details, luxurious chandeliers, dark woods, and warm, rich color schemes.
