This beautiful home located near a central Connecticut wine vineyard was purchased by a growing family as their dream home. They decided to make their informal entry into their home a priority. We truly are believers in combining function with elegance. This mudroom opens up to their kitchen so why not create some amazing storage that looks great too! This space speaks to their transitional style with a touch of tradition. From mixing the metal finishes to the herringbone floor pattern we were able to create a timeless, functional first impression to a beautiful home. Every family can benefit from having a space called “Home Central” from pre-school on…come in and take your shoes off. Custom designed by Hartley and Hill Design. All materials and furnishings in this space are available through Hartley and Hill Design. www.hartleyandhilldesign.com 888-639-0639

The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn
Free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   Collaborations with builders on new construction is a favorite part of my job. I love seeing a house go up from the blueprints to the end of the build. It is always a journey filled with a thousand decisions, some creative on-the-spot thinking and yes, usually a few stressful moments. This Naperville project was a collaboration with a local builder and architect. The Kitchen Studio collaborated by completing the cabinetry design and final layout for the entire home. Access to the back of the house is through the mudroom which is outfitted with just about every possible storage feature you can think of for a mudroom. For starters, the basics – a locker for each family member. In addition to that, there is an entire cabinet with roll outs devoted just to shoes, one for cleaning supplies and one for extra coats. The room also features a small clean up sink as well as a set of refrigerator drawers making grabbing a Gatorade on the way to soccer practice a piece of cake. If you are building a new home, The Kitchen Studio can offer expert help to make the most of your new construction home. We provide the expertise needed to ensure that you are getting the most of your investment when it comes to cabinetry, design and storage solutions. Give us a call if you would like to find out more! We all have a disparate collection of boots, coats, umbrellas and bags that need a spot to reside. The mudroom is the organized, stylish answer to all of that clutter. Whether you have a distinct transition space in your home or you simply want to add function to your entry, consider the following mudroom ideas to get you started.

1. Transform a Hallway

While mudrooms were originally back entrances separate from the front door, you can use any entry in a similar way. Simply add wall hooks or shelves to your hall and you’ll enjoy the same organizational benefits.

2. Add a Bench

Another way to add ease and function to any ordinary entryway is to add a mudroom bench. This can be the perfect spot for taking shoes on and off, or simply placing bags and coats. If you’ve got the space, opt for a stately hall tree, which includes a bench and shelves or wall hooks built together.

3. Use the Laundry Room

In many homes, the garage entrance goes straight through the laundry room, making it the perfect space for a de facto mudroom. Simply add in accessible storage wherever you can: think open shelves, wicker baskets or wall hooks.

4. Keep It in the Garage

If you often enter your home through the garage, try adding a shoe bench, door mat or even built-in shelving so you can keep the clutter out of your home entirely.

5. Go Bold with Tile

Don’t forget to have a little fun with your mudroom design. Brightly colored or bold mosaic tile can demarcate the space and create a warm and welcoming mood.

6. Choose an Accent Color

Adding color and decor to your walls is another great way to bring character to the space. For example, you might install white wainscoting or shiplap on the lower half of your walls, and paint the upper half blue.

7. Hang a Mirror

If you’re looking for mudroom ideas for small spaces, try hanging a decorative wall mirror. The space will feel bigger and you’ll have a spot to quickly check your look before heading out.

8. Make Use of Bins

Visually appealing bins are the glue behind mudroom organization, as they’ll give you space to toss dirty shoes or miscellaneous gear without seeing the clutter. Choose bins made of metal, wicker or wood to complement your space.
